UNDERSTANDING YOUR SKIN
Meet Your Skin's
Moisture Keeper
THE SKIN BARRIER
Your skin’s outermost layer, the stratum corneum, is more than a surface. It’s a carefully organized protective layer that helps regulate water loss and limits the entry of unwanted substances.
Think of it as a garden wall. Flattened skin cells form the bricks, while a mixture of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids forms the mortar between them. This structure helps keep moisture where your skin needs it.

Skin cells = bricks
Natural fats = mortar
Why Moisture Retention Matters
Water naturally moves through your skin and evaporates into the surrounding air. Scientists call this transepidermal water loss, or TEWL. When the barrier is disrupted, water can escape more readily, contributing to dryness, flaking, and discomfort.
Barrier disruption and inflammation can also reinforce one another. Irritation can disturb the barrier, while a weakened barrier can leave skin more vulnerable to further irritation. Gentle cleansing and consistent moisturizing help interrupt that cycle.
Where Tallow Fits In
Tallow provides a rich, fatty base for moisturizing balms. As an emollient, it can soften rough skin, while its protective surface layer can help hold existing moisture in.
Tallow helps your skin hold onto moisture, making it especially lovely to apply just after washing. Gently pat your skin dry, leaving it slightly damp, then smooth on a small amount of balm to help seal that moisture in.
Calendula: A Gentle Tradition
With its sunny golden petals, calendula has earned a treasured place in traditional herbal skin care. Herbalists have long prepared its flowers in oils and salves for dry, delicate skin in need of gentle care. We carry that tradition into our Calendula Tallow Balm, pairing calendula infused oils with a rich, moisturizing base. It’s a simple ritual of nourishment for skin that needs a little extra tenderness.
Comfrey: Rooted in Herbal Tradition
Comfrey has a long history in herbal salves and poultices, valued by generations of herbalists tending to weather worn skin. Its broad green leaves remain a familiar presence in herb gardens, connecting the care of the land with the care of the people who work it.
Our Comfrey Tallow Balm brings that botanical tradition into everyday moisturizing care, combining comfrey infused oil with nourishing tallow to soften dry, rough skin. Apply to intact skin and follow the precautions on the product page.
